About the Central African CFA Franc

The CFA franc was created in 1945, tied first to the French franc and then to the euro from 1999, at a parity that has not moved since. The Central African version is issued by the BEAC in Yaoundé for the six members of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community, and its convertibility rests on a guarantee from the French Treasury.

Because the parity is fixed, XAF does not move against the euro at all: its rate against the dollar, the pound or the naira simply follows the euro's. XAF and the West African CFA franc (XOF) share that parity but are two distinct currencies, issued by two different central banks, and notes from one zone are not accepted in the other.

The Central African CFA franc is the currency of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, the six members of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community.

FAQ

Which countries use the XAF franc?

The Central African CFA franc is used by Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. All six belong to the Central African Economic and Monetary Community and share the BEAC as their central bank.

Is the Central African CFA franc pegged to the euro?

Yes, at a fixed parity that has not changed since the euro was introduced in 1999. Converting euros to XAF therefore gives the same figure today as a year ago, while the rate against the dollar, the pound or the yuan moves exactly as the euro does.

Can I spend West African CFA notes in Cameroon?

No. XOF and XAF hold the same parity with the euro but are separate currencies with separate issuers, and notes from one zone are not legal tender in the other. You need to exchange them, usually at a bank or a licensed bureau.
