About the Nigerian Naira
The naira replaced the Nigerian pound in 1973. Nigeria is the largest economy and the largest oil producer on the continent, and the naira reflects that: oil revenue, the supply of foreign currency and the money sent home by Nigerians abroad are the main forces behind its value.
For years the country ran an official rate alongside a much weaker parallel market rate, and the two figures could be far apart. In June 2023 the central bank merged its trading windows and let the market price the naira, which fell sharply against the dollar and has stayed volatile since. Rates quoted online are the official market rate, and a street changer may offer something different.
The naira is legal tender in Nigeria only, the most populous country in Africa.
