About the UAE Dirham
The dirham was introduced in 1973, shortly after the federation was formed, replacing the Qatar and Dubai riyal and, in Abu Dhabi, the Bahraini dinar. It has been formally pegged to the US dollar since 1997, at a parity that has not changed since.
That peg explains how the dirham behaves. Against the dollar the rate is effectively flat; against the euro, the pound or the rupee it moves exactly as the dollar does. For a visitor the currency is therefore predictable: what changes is not the dirham itself but the strength of the dollar.
The dirham is legal tender across all seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

FAQ
What is the currency of Dubai?
Dubai uses the United Arab Emirates dirham, ISO code AED, the currency of all seven emirates. It is issued by the Central Bank of the UAE, divides into 100 fils and is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate.
Is the UAE dirham pegged to the dollar?
Yes, formally since 1997, at a parity that has not moved since. The dirham-to-dollar rate is therefore stable from one day to the next, while the dirham's rate against the euro, the pound or the rupee follows the dollar's own movements.
Can I pay in euros or dollars in the UAE?
Prices are set in dirhams and payment is expected in dirhams. Some hotels and shops accept dollars or euros at their own rate, which is usually worse than the mid-market rate, so paying by card or with locally withdrawn cash costs less.
