About the Saudi Riyal

The riyal has been the kingdom's currency since its founding, and the institution that issues it, SAMA, was established in 1952; it took the name Saudi Central Bank in 2020 while keeping its acronym. The riyal was fixed to the US dollar in 1986, having previously been tied to the International Monetary Fund's special drawing right.

Because of that parity, the riyal tracks the dollar closely: its rate against the euro, the pound or the rupee is the dollar's rate, converted. Saudi Arabia prices its oil exports in dollars, which is a large part of why the fixed link has held through wide swings in the oil price.

The riyal is the sole legal tender in Saudi Arabia, and it is the currency pilgrims use for Hajj and Umrah in Mecca and Medina.

FAQ

What is the currency of Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia uses the riyal, ISO code SAR, issued by the Saudi Central Bank in Riyadh. One riyal divides into 100 halalas, and the riyal is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate.

Is the Saudi riyal pegged to the dollar?

Yes, at a parity fixed in 1986 that has not changed since. The riyal-to-dollar rate is therefore stable, and the riyal's value against other currencies rises and falls exactly with the dollar.

What is the difference between the Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham?

They are separate currencies, issued by different central banks, and they are not interchangeable even though both are pegged to the US dollar. Each peg was set at its own parity, so a riyal and a dirham are not worth the same, and you need to exchange one for the other when crossing between the two countries.
