About the Indian Rupee

The name comes from rupiya, the silver coin standardised by Sher Shah Suri in the sixteenth century, and the unit has outlasted every regime that has issued it since. The Reserve Bank of India was founded in 1935 and the currency was decimalised in 1957, when the rupee of 16 annas became a rupee of 100 paise. Coins below one rupee have effectively disappeared from circulation, so paise survive in accounting and on price labels rather than in pockets.

Indian amounts are grouped differently from Western ones: after the first thousand, digits are separated in pairs, so ten million rupees is written 1,00,00,000 and read as one crore, while a hundred thousand is 1,00,000, one lakh. Remittances sent home by Indians working abroad are among the largest such flows in the world, which makes dollar, dirham, pound and euro conversions into rupees an everyday transaction for millions of households.

The rupee is the currency of India and is also legal tender in Bhutan alongside the ngultrum, which is pegged at par with it. It is widely accepted in Nepal, whose own rupee is pegged to the Indian one.

FAQ

What is the Indian rupee?

The Indian rupee is the official currency of India, written INR under the ISO 4217 standard and shown with the ₹ sign. One rupee is divided into 100 paise. It is issued by the Reserve Bank of India, and its name descends from the rupiya, a silver coin of the sixteenth century.

What do lakh and crore mean in rupees?

A lakh is one hundred thousand rupees, written 1,00,000, and a crore is ten million, written 1,00,00,000. Indian digit grouping separates the last three digits and then works in pairs, so a converted amount displayed in Western grouping will look unfamiliar even though the value is identical.

Why do so many people convert dollars and dirhams to rupees?

Millions of Indians work abroad, particularly in the Gulf states, North America and the United Kingdom, and send money home regularly. Those transfers make USD to INR and AED to INR among the most searched conversions anywhere. The mid-market rate shown here is the reference point; a remittance service will quote a rate below it plus, in most cases, a fee.
