About the Russian Ruble
The ruble is among the oldest currency names still in circulation, recorded in Novgorod as early as the 13th century. The current unit dates from the redenomination of 1 January 1998, which removed three zeros, and the ₽ symbol was adopted in 2013 after a public vote.
Since 2022 the ruble has moved under capital controls and sanctions rather than in an open market. It is no longer freely dealt on the main international venues, quotations differ between sources, and buying or selling rubles outside Russia is difficult. Any ruble figure should be read as indicative and checked against what your own bank will actually apply.
The ruble is the currency of the Russian Federation, where it is the sole legal tender.

FAQ
What is the currency of Russia?
Russia uses the ruble, ISO code RUB, issued by the Bank of Russia in Moscow. One ruble divides into 100 kopeks and amounts are written with the sign ₽.
Why do ruble rates differ so much between sources?
Since 2022 the ruble has not been freely traded on the main international markets, so there is no single deep market setting one price. Different providers quote different figures depending on where they source them, and exchanging rubles outside Russia is often not possible at all. Treat the rate shown here as indicative.
Is the Belarusian ruble the same currency?
No. The Belarusian ruble is a separate currency with its own ISO code, BYN, issued by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus. The two share a name and a history but have different values and are not interchangeable.
