About the Brazilian Real
The real was introduced in July 1994 as the centrepiece of the Plano Real, the stabilisation programme that ended years of hyperinflation. It followed a series of currencies replaced in quick succession over the previous decade, and it is the one that held.
Brazil has let the real float since January 1999. It behaves like a commodity currency: the country is among the world's largest exporters of soy, iron ore, coffee and crude oil, so demand for those goods, the central bank's Selic policy rate and investor appetite for risk are what move it.
The real is the sole legal tender in Brazil, the largest economy in South America.
