About the Polish Zloty
The modern złoty dates from 1924, when the reform led by Władysław Grabski replaced the Polish mark, ruined by hyperinflation, with a unit backed by gold. The złoty in your wallet today is younger still: on 1 January 1995 Poland redenominated at 10,000 old złoty to one new złoty, which is why the ISO code moved from PLZ to PLN and why prices from the early 1990s look absurd read back now.
Poland joined the European Union in 2004 and its accession treaty commits it to adopting the euro eventually, but it has not joined the exchange rate mechanism and has set no date. The złoty therefore floats, with monetary policy set by the National Bank of Poland in Warsaw, and it tends to move with interest rate expectations in Warsaw and Frankfurt and with the region's political news.
The złoty is the sole legal tender in Poland, a European Union member that has not adopted the euro.

FAQ
What is the currency of Poland?
Poland uses the złoty, ISO code PLN, written zł and issued by Narodowy Bank Polski. One złoty divides into 100 groszy. The word means golden, a memory of the gold coins the name once described.
Does Poland use the euro?
No. Poland is in the European Union but not in the euro area, and it has set no target date for joining. Everyday prices, wages and taxes are all in złoty, and the currency floats freely against the euro.
Can I pay in euros in Poland?
Generally not. A few airport shops and hotels accept euro notes, but at a rate that costs you noticeably more than changing money properly. Pay by card in złoty, and decline the terminal's offer to charge you in euros, since that conversion is done at the merchant's rate rather than the market one.
