About the Turkish Lira
The current lira dates from 1 January 2005, when six zeros were removed from the old lira and the unit was briefly called the new Turkish lira, a name dropped in 2009. The ₺ symbol was chosen by public competition in 2012.
The lira has lost much of its value over the past decade, under sustained high inflation and a policy course that long kept interest rates low while prices rose. It floats and moves quickly, so a rate noted a week ago is no longer a reliable guide. That is also why some tourist prices in Türkiye are quoted in euros or dollars, even though payment is made in lira.
The lira is the currency of Türkiye and is also the currency used in Northern Cyprus.

FAQ
What is the currency of Turkey?
Türkiye uses the lira, ISO code TRY, issued by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye in Ankara. One lira divides into 100 kuruş and amounts are written with the sign ₺.
Why does the Turkish lira keep losing value?
Türkiye has run high inflation for several years, and for a long stretch policy rates were held below the rate of price increases, which erodes what a lira buys and what it is worth abroad. The currency floats, so that pressure shows up directly in the exchange rate rather than being absorbed by a peg.
Should I change money before travelling to Türkiye?
Exchange offices in Turkish cities are competitive and usually beat what you would get at home, and cards are widely accepted. Change a small amount before you leave for arrival costs, then the rest locally, and compare the offer against the mid-market rate shown here.
