About the Swedish Krona
The krona dates from 1873, when Sweden and Denmark formed the Scandinavian Monetary Union and replaced their old riksdaler and rigsdaler with a gold-based krona. Norway joined two years later. The union broke apart during the First World War, but all three countries kept the name, which is why Sweden, Denmark and Norway each quote a currency called krona or krone today.
Sweden joined the European Union in 1995 and rejected the euro in the referendum of September 2003, so the krona stayed. It has floated since November 1992, when the Riksbank gave up defending a fixed rate, and it tends to move with Swedish exports and with how much risk investors are willing to hold. Sweden is also one of the least cash-dependent countries in the world: cards and instant transfers cover almost everything, and many shops no longer handle notes at all.
The krona is the sole legal tender in Sweden, and it is a separate currency from the Danish and Norwegian krone despite the shared name.

FAQ
What is the currency of Sweden?
Sweden uses the krona, ISO code SEK, written kr and issued by Sveriges Riksbank in Stockholm. One krona divides into 100 öre, though öre coins were withdrawn in 2010 and cash amounts are now rounded to the nearest krona. The plural is kronor.
Does Sweden use the euro?
No. Sweden is an EU member but voted against adopting the euro in 2003 and has set no date since, so prices are quoted in kronor and euro notes are not generally accepted in shops. The krona floats against the euro rather than being pegged to it, so the rate changes throughout the day.
Do I need cash in Sweden?
Rarely. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, including buses, museums and small cafés, and a number of businesses are cashless by policy. Changing a large amount of kronor before you travel is usually unnecessary, and paying by card in kronor avoids the conversion margin a terminal adds when it offers to charge you in your home currency.
