About the Vietnamese Dong

The word dong means a bronze or copper coin, a name inherited from centuries of cast cash. The modern currency was unified in 1978, replacing the separate northern and southern units after reunification, then reissued in 1985 at ten old dong to one new one as part of a price and wage reform that instead produced years of very high inflation. Vietnam moved to polymer banknotes in 2003; coins were minted the same year but fell out of use within a few years, so cash in practice is entirely paper.

The State Bank publishes a daily central reference rate against the US dollar and allows trading within a band around it, which is neither a fixed peg nor a free float: the dong moves in small, managed steps rather than swinging. Because the smallest note is worth so little, prices are long, and Vietnamese writing shortens them with k for thousands, so a menu reading 50k means fifty thousand dong. Converted figures should be read as whole dong, since no smaller unit exists to pay with.

The dong is the sole legal tender of Vietnam, and Vietnamese regulations restrict quoting or settling domestic transactions in foreign currency.

FAQ

What is the Vietnamese dong?

The dong is the official currency of Vietnam, written VND under the ISO 4217 standard and shown with the ₫ sign. It is issued by the State Bank of Vietnam, and its subunits, the hao and the xu, are no longer in use. Banknotes have been printed on polymer since 2003.

Does Vietnam use coins?

Not in practice. Coins were issued in 2003 but fell out of circulation within a few years, and cash transactions today are made entirely with banknotes. The smallest notes in common use are worth very little, so prices are usually rounded and written with a k for thousands.

Is the dong pegged to the US dollar?

Not exactly. The State Bank of Vietnam sets a daily central reference rate against the US dollar and lets the currency trade inside a band around it, so the dong is managed rather than fixed or freely floating. In practice it moves in small steps, and its rate against other currencies follows whatever the US dollar is doing.
