About the Ghanaian Cedi
The name comes from sedie, the Akan word for the cowrie shell that served as money on the Gold Coast long before colonial currency arrived. Ghana replaced the pound with the cedi in 1965. The unit in circulation today is younger: in July 2007 the Bank of Ghana redenominated at 10,000 old cedis to one, which is why the ISO code is GHS rather than the older GHC.
Gold, cocoa and oil supply most of Ghana's export earnings, so the cedi reacts to those prices as well as to domestic inflation and interest rates. It floats and has lost ground against the dollar in several sharp episodes over the past decade. Pricing goods or services in foreign currency is not permitted in Ghana without a licence: quotes may reference a dollar figure informally, but payment is made in cedis.
The cedi is the sole legal tender in Ghana. Its neighbours Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Togo use the West African CFA franc, a separate currency held at a fixed parity with the euro.

FAQ
What is the currency of Ghana?
Ghana uses the cedi, ISO code GHS, written GH₵ and issued by the Bank of Ghana in Accra. One cedi divides into 100 pesewas. The name comes from the Akan word for the cowrie shell once used as money along the coast.
Why is the code GHS and not GHC?
GHC was the old cedi. In July 2007 Ghana redenominated its currency, exchanging 10,000 old cedis for one new one and issuing fresh notes and coins, and the ISO code changed to GHS to mark the new unit. Old cedi prices from before that date are a thousandfold out of scale with today's.
Can I pay in dollars or euros in Ghana?
No. Ghanaian law requires prices to be quoted and settled in cedis unless the seller holds a licence to do otherwise, so foreign cash has to be changed first. Use a bank or a licensed forex bureau, and check the offer against the mid-market rate before accepting it.
