About the Egyptian Pound
The pound was introduced in 1834, replacing the piastre as Egypt's main unit of account, and the piastre stayed on as its hundredth part. The currency was tied to sterling for much of the twentieth century before the link moved to the US dollar in the 1960s, and the Central Bank of Egypt has issued the notes since it was established in 1961.
Since 2016 Egypt has moved in steps away from a fixed dollar rate, floating the pound in November of that year and letting it move sharply again in March 2024, each time closing a gap that had opened between the official rate and a parallel market. Egypt earns most of its foreign currency from remittances sent home by Egyptians working abroad, from Suez Canal traffic and from tourism, so pressure on any of the three shows up in the exchange rate.
The pound is the sole legal tender in Egypt, where tourist prices are sometimes quoted in dollars or euros but settled in pounds.

FAQ
What is the currency of Egypt?
Egypt uses the pound, ISO code EGP, written E£ or ج.م and issued by the Central Bank of Egypt. One pound divides into 100 piastres. In Arabic it is called the gineih, and prices below one pound are quoted in piastres.
Can I pay in dollars or euros in Egypt?
Some hotels, tour operators and tourist sites quote prices in foreign currency, but payment is normally settled in pounds and paying in foreign cash usually costs you more than changing money first. Use a bank or an authorised exchange office rather than an informal changer, and compare what you are offered against the mid-market rate.
Why has the Egyptian pound lost value?
Egypt has devalued repeatedly since 2016 while moving from a fixed dollar rate towards a more flexible one, under high inflation and recurring shortages of foreign currency. The pound now moves rather than being held in place, so a rate you saved months ago is unlikely to still hold.
